Kyla Dever, originally from Santa Cruz, Ca, is currently a junior transfer student at San Diego State University pursuing a degree in International Business with a focus in Asia and Korean, as well as a minor in French. During high school Kyla was heavily involved with both club and school soccer, as well as volunteering with the Literacy Program of Santa Cruz, a tutoring program that helps non-native English speakers in the community learn English through one-on-one tutoring. During her time studying business at Cabrillo Junior College, she would come to realize her passion for language and her desire to immerse herself in other cultures around the world. In the summer of 2017, she traveled independently to Seoul, South Korea to participate in a 3-month long intensive Korean program. Although making friends wasn’t easy at first, she had the opportunity to make so many wonderful, life-long friendships with people from countries around the world. This experience prompted her to seek out San Diego State’s International Business program for its dual focus in business and language. She would then go on to return to South Korea to continue her intensive language studies for the first 6 months of 2019 before transferring to SDSU. In the future, Kyla hopes to be able to use her language skills and appreciation for cultures worldwide to work in an internationally focused company. In her free time Kyla enjoys playing piano, film photography, making friends laugh, and will probably bake you cookies or banana bread if you ask. She also loves her grandparents and reading good books.
